Bio:
Cate Anevski is an artist, Illustrator, and maker extraordinaire living in Portland, OR. She works in a variety of media, from watercolors to woodburing, to pursue her goal of sharing her surreal version of the world.

Cate shows her work in galleries in St. Louis, including Cranky Yellow, Art St. Louis, Chesterfield Arts, and Star Clipper. She is looking to expand her range around the world, the first step of which has been to show work in the Cultural Center of Villeurbanne in Lyon, France, where she lived from 1997–1998.

Cate obtained a Bachelors of Arts in graphic design from Loyola University, Chicago, in 2005, but decided shortly afterwards to switch her focus to fine arts in order to express her personal vision. Her next goal is to obtain a Masters of Fine Arts, which she plans to begin in fall of 2009.

In the meantime, she fills her days with illustration and freelance design, which you can take a look at on her design Web site.

Artist Statement:
In my work, I like to create a story. My head is filled to the brim with bizarre images. These images are inspired by dreams, books, movies, nature, my pets, and everything else I've ever seen. I decided to become an illustrator so that I could share these images with everyone, whether they want to see it or not.

I like to use mundane characters and place them in extraordinary circumstances. I use the same character over and over again but place her in a different costume and setting each time. In this way, I hope to make the focus of each piece the character’s experience rather than the character herself. I would rather enable the viewers to go through the story by placing themselves in the story, not by living it vicariously through the character.

I enjoy mixing media in unexpected ways. I find this to be the best part of combining traditional and digital media into my work: I am able to experiment with a new medium and push it in directions that have previously been unexplored. This also allows me to avoid having to choose a single medium. Instead, I decide what will work best for the theme I am working on and combine many media in a single series or piece.

I love to hear from people who like or hate my work, so if you have any questions or comments at all, feel free to contact me.
